Web design. What is it and why is it important?

Web design, a key element to online success

Website Design

By taking the time to understand what you are offering, we can create and deliver a web design that accurately reflects your business.

We are often asked at the first meeting with potential new clients, “What will our new site look like?”

The truth is, each new project begins with a blank slate. It would be premature and inappropriate to begin with a preconceived idea of how things should look. The first step of each new project is to learn about your business. We want to understand what you are selling, what makes your company different from your competitors, who your customers are, and what drives them to buy.

How we begin to develop a web design

We’ll begin by sending you links to websites of your competitors or from others in your industry who we think are doing a good job with their websites, and we’ll ask you for your feedback. Then you’ll show us some websites that you like. Doing this will give us a feeling for your aesthetic, making it much more likely that we’ll deliver a website design that you really love.

To get a feel for your business, we’ll review your marketing materials, logos and advertising. If you have a physical location, we’ll visit. Your website design should be an accurate reflection of you and your business. Once we understand what we are selling, we will have a better idea how to present your business in a way that your potential customers will find appealing and compelling.

We understand that it can be a little scary entering into an agreement like this not knowing what you are going to get in the end. It is important that you trust us to be able to design something that makes sense for you. To get a better idea of the kind of work that we do, please visit our online website portfolio. There you can see a large sampling of our previous work.

Our design philosophy is: clean, simple and intuitive.

Unless you’re YouTube, most people aren’t going to your website just to waste time. If they’ve found their way to your site, they’re probably looking for something specific. They want to get in and get out, find what they need and move on to something else.

Good design takes the user by the hand and guides them where they need to go. It helps them find the information they need quickly and easily. Good design doesn’t scream, “here I am – aren’t I beautiful?” No, good design is quiet, it lets the content do the talking.

The final point we’d like to about website design concerns the prominent, almost ubiquitous use of mobile devices to surf the web. It goes without saying that your site has to be mobile-friendly, and every site we build looks great when viewed on both desktop and mobile. The thing for you to keep in mind is that your site is not going to look or work the same on different platforms. Navigation menus change, font sizes and images adjust accordingly. Layouts have to be allowed to shift and adjust to an endless variety of screen sizes and devices. The sites that make the transition best, are the ones that are the most flexible.

  1. As we are shifting into a world where Smartphones and tablets are beginning to rule the roost in terms of connectivity, more people are searching information from their tablets and mobile phones. Having a fully responsive website is a very important factor when dealing with local SEO. It seems to me many small business are missing this factor. Wonder why? I designed our company website https://xcurrent.org/ mobile friendly and local SEO results are amazing.

I’d love to hear others thoughts on this subject!

    All the best,
    Roger

    • Hi Roger,

I suggest you start by fixing the typo at the top of the home page!

I see you’re using the X theme. What do you think of it? Did that play into the name of your business?

Your approach is quite different from ours, with lots of animation effects, large background images, parallax scrolling etc. I find some of them a bit jarring, especially because the background images jiggle up and down when I scroll (Chrome 46.0.2490.86 on OS X 10.10 Yosemite).

      Good luck!

  2. I totally agree to this article and it shows the importance of a website design. A responsive webdesign matters more now as people pretends to use mobile phones rather than using desktops or else tablets. we have our own company website too and it was developed by a team of experts and the results are just outstanding. If you wish take a look at our website and share your thoughts on this.
