Website development. What is it and why is it important?

Website Development: layersWhat is website development?

Website development takes you from static design to fully functioning website. There are literally hundreds of different platforms on which a website can be built, and no single platform is the best in all situations.

We have built websites on many different platforms including WordPress, ExpressionEngine, SquareSpace, even DreamWeaver. The platform we use most frequently is WordPress. We have found it to be the most flexible, stable and reliable.

Why is it important to choose the right web developer?

Web standards and trends change every day. Your web developer has to be constantly reading, learning and testing to stay up-to-date. We firmly believe that weekend, part-time or even first-time developers simply cannot offer you the guidance, expertise or final product that passionate, full-time developers can.

It isn’t enough to just know how to code. Your developer needs to understand how the web works. The developer has to be a stickler for security, efficiency and accuracy. They have to want to understand your business, your customers and your goals. You need to feel confident that your new website will be a useful, long-term business asset, not an expensive mistake.

A good web developer is a problem solver. And I’m not talking McGyver problem solver. A quick fix isn’t necessarily the best fix – putting Duct Tape on the problem and painting it pink isn’t a solution. A problem solver digs and digs until they understands the core issue. You want the solution to fix the problem, not just mask it.

Your website isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it endeavor, so your web developer needs to be someone you want to work with in the long term. Are they trustworthy? Do they bring relevant skills to the table? You need to feel comfortable working with your developer and be able to trust them to steer you to the best solution.

To ensure that you are hiring the right developer, check their references. Talk to previous customers. It’s true, every business relationship is different and if you’ve been in business long enough and worked with enough different kinds of people, one relationship is bound to go sour. But by talking to a good sampling of your potential web developer’s previous customers, you will be able to get a good sense of what it would be like to work with them.
