How to convert Word files to .txt

There are plenty of reasons why you might want to convert Words files to .txt format. Perhaps you’d like to reduce the number of attachments you send with your email but you’re not sure how. Perhaps you are having trouble importing text directly from Word and want instead to import it from an unformatted text file. Below are step-by-step instructions explaining how to convert a Word document to a text file.

  1. Open your Word document.
  2. From the “File” pull down menu select at the top of your screen select “Save As.” A new window will pop open.
  3. From the “Save As Type” pull down at the bottom of the new window (just under File Name), select “Plain Text”, (You may have to use the scroll bar.)
  4. Now click “Save.”
